hot-'I thought it was my sister': Woman loses $2,000 to Facebook scam

Now, you can't even trust your sister on Facebook.

Edythe Schumacher logged onto the social networking site recently and a picture of her sister popped up immediately, inviting her into a Facebook chat. After a bit of small talk, Schumacher’s sister – Susan Palmer – egged her on to apply for a government grant, saying she’d just received one. For an up-front fee of $2,000, Schumacher was assured, she'd get access to up to $500,000.

Schumacher trusted her sister — and lost $2,000.

Apparently, Facebook impersonation scams have reached a new level of duplicity. Palmer's account had been hacked, Schumacher says, by an impersonator skilled enough to pretend to be her own flesh and blood. The fake Palmer eventually talked Schumacher into wiring $2,000 to an address in Massachusetts.

"Turns out I was not chatting at all with my sister," Schumacher told authorities, according to a report filed with the Ohio state attorney general’s office. "I would never have sent the money if I didn’t think it was my sister."

Facebook account hijacking has been around as long as Facebook itself. While it often amounts to little more than childish pranks, the theft of someone's identity on Facebook can lead to real harm. Imposters have successfully tricked victims into wiring money before — a common scam involves contacting friends and writing an email with dramatic claims of muggings, accompanied by desperate pleas to wire money

HOT-Sudan's largest gold mining operation

REFILE - CORRECTING DATE A general view of a quarry at a gold mining area at Ariab September 28, 2011. Sudan's largest single gold mining operation is run by Ariab, a partnership between Sudan's government and Canada's La Mancha, in east Sudan's Red Sea state. Sudan plans to more than double its gold output in two years partly to help make up for a possible fall in oil revenues if its crude-producing south chooses to secede in a looming referendum, the minerals minister said early this month.

Hot- National Debt: CNBC Explains

The deficit refers to the difference, in a single year, between government receipts and spending. Those deficits become the national debt when they are added together. They're tied to each other, but they're different.

Deficit spending is sometimes viewed as temporary but necessary. For the government, that might be true if it needs to spend money to fight a war. For a person, it might be true if he or she wants to take out a loan to buy a car.

But over time, running large annual deficits is a bad thing, for the government and for the average person. Here's why: think of the government's annual deficit spending like a person using a credit card to spend above his or her means. If that type of spending continues year after year, the interest on the credit card builds up. The minimum payments become larger and larger. Eventually, the charges become so unwieldy that the card holder can't pay them off without making big sacrifices (say, selling the house and the car) or declaring bankruptcy.

cool, hot-'We didn't mean to track you' says Facebook as social network giant admits to 'bugs' in new privacy row

Facebook has admitted that it has been watching the web pages its members visit – even when they have logged out.

In its latest privacy blunder, the social networking site was forced to confirm that it has been constantly tracking its 750million users, even when they are using other sites.

The social networking giant says the huge privacy breach was simply a mistake - that software automatically downloaded to users' computers when they logged in to Facebook 'inadvertently' sent information to the company, whether or not they were logged in at the time.

Most would assume that Facebook stops monitoring them after they leave its site, but technology bloggers discovered this was not the case.

In fact, data has been regularly sent back to the social network’s servers – data that could be worth billions when creating 'targeted' advertising based on the sites users visit.

The website’s practices were exposed by Australian technology blogger Nik Cubrilovic and have provoked a furious response across the internet.

Facebook claims to have 'fixed' the issue - and 'thanked' Mr Cubrilovic for pointing it out - while simultaneously claiming that it wasn't really an issue in the first place.

Mr Cubrilovic found that when you sign up to Facebook it automatically puts files known as ‘cookies’ on your computer which monitor your browsing history.

This is still the case. But Facebook claims the cookies no longer send information while you are logged out of its site. If you are logged in to Facebook, the cookies will still send the information, and they remain on your computer unless you manually delete them.

hot- On the run for 41 years, hijacker traced to Portugal

(CNN) -- He had been on the run for four decades. He escaped from prison when Richard Nixon was in the White House, joined the Black Liberation Army in Detroit, hijacked a plane and (in)famously demanded that FBI agents deliver ransom money in bathing suits. And they did.

Now, after a manhunt spanning three continents that often appeared to run cold, the FBI has finally found George Wright.

At age 68, he was living quietly in the resort of Sintra near Lisbon in Portugal when he was arrested Monday.

The United States is seeking his extradition from Portugal to serve the remainder of a 15- to 30-year sentence for murder. Portuguese judicial authorities could not be reached Tuesday for details of the extradition process.

Wright is fighting extradition, a U.S. federal agent said, and his next court appearance in Portugal is in about two weeks.

Wright's life story reads like an international crime novel. In 1962, at the age of 19, he and three associates carried out a series of robberies in New Jersey. Wright and another man shot and killed a World War II veteran in a gas station robbery in Farmingdale.

He was arrested soon afterward and, after pleading no defense, was sentenced to 15 to 30 years in prison. But in 1970, Wright escaped from Bayside State Prison in Leesburg, New Jersey, reportedly stealing the warden's car to make his getaway.

Wright made his way to Detroit, then a hotbed of militant black politics, and joined the Black Liberation Army. (He is also reputed to have made some money during this period as a part-time model, using an alias.)

On July 31, 1972, Wright and four other members of the Black Liberation Army went to Detroit airport and boarded Delta Flight 841 for Miami. Wright was dressed as a priest and carried a handgun in a hollowed-out Bible.

Airport security was different in those days. Various Palestinian groups were hijacking planes regularly, as were individuals keen to go to Cuba. Altogether, the U.S. Department of Transportation recorded 364 hijackings worldwide between 1968 and 1972: more than one a week on average.

The hijackers of Delta 841 -- three men and two women accompanied by three children -- seized the plane as it approached Miami. The FBI says "subsequent investigation identified Wright as one of the hijackers."

Once on the ground, the hijackers demanded that FBI agents dressed only in bathing suits deliver $1 million ransom to the plane. They wanted to be sure the agents were not carrying guns. The money was duly delivered by the scantily clad agents.

The hijackers allowed the 88 passengers off but kept the flight crew on board and ordered that the plane fly to Boston. With the addition of an extra navigator (wearing swim trunks and a shirt), the DC-8 was refueled there and flew on to Algiers.

Algeria in the early 1970s was run by a hard-line socialist government that was no friend of the United States and allowed various dissidents, militants and alleged terrorists to take sanctuary there. A leading member of the Black Panthers, Eldridge Cleaver, had been welcomed as a political refugee there in 1968 after jumping bail in California.

The Algerian government confiscated and returned the $1 million in ransom money to the U.S., but Wright and his associates melted away. Some of the hijackers were arrested in Paris in 1976, but for decades, there was no trace of Wright.

Then, nine years ago, a fugitive investigator with the New Jersey Department of Corrections working with the U.S. Marshals Service got a lead. Officials won't comment on reports that Walker had begun to contact relatives in the U.S.

Juan Mattos, U.S. marshal for the District of New Jersey, said: "Over the course of nine years, their tenacious resolve has proven to be very powerful in seeking justice and closure for the victims."

And in a press release Tuesday, Michael Ward of the FBI's Newark Division said the case should "serve notice that the FBI's determination in pursuing subjects will not diminish over time or distance."

At the time of the hijacking, there was limited screening of passengers at U.S. airports. This screening system did not require every passenger to be examined, only those who met a profile established by the Federal Aviation Administration.

After the Algiers flight and several hijackings that turned violent, the Nixon administration instructed the FAA to adopt emergency regulations to improve screening. At the end of 1972, the FAA ordered airports to ensure that all passengers and their carry-on baggage be inspected before boarding.

CNN's Emily Smith contributed to this report.

hot-Treasure hunters eye huge silver haul from WWII ship

When the SS Gairsoppa was torpedoed by a German U-boat 70 years ago, it took its huge silver cargo to a watery grave. US divers are working to recover what may be the biggest shipwreck haul ever, valued at some $210 million.

Florida-based Odyssey Marine Exploration on Monday confirmed the identity and location of the Gairsoppa, and cited official documents indicating the British ship was carrying some 219 tons of silver when it sank in 1941 in the North Atlantic some 300 miles (490 kilometers) off the Irish coast.

Valued then at 600,000 pounds, the silver today is worth about $210 million, which would make it history's largest recovery of precious metals lost at sea, Odyssey said.

"We've accomplished the first phase of this project -- the location and identification of the target shipwreck -- and now we're hard at work planning for the recovery phase," Odyssey senior project manager Andrew Craig said in a statement.

"Given the orientation and condition of the shipwreck, we are extremely confident that our planned salvage operation will be well suited for the recovery of this silver cargo."

Recovery is expected to begin next spring.

After a competitive tender process the British government awarded Odyssey an exclusive salvage contract for the cargo, and under the agreement Odyssey will retain 80 percent of the silver bullion salvaged from the wreck.

The 412-foot (125-meter) Gairsoppa had been sailing from India back to Britain in February 1941 bearing a cargo of silver, pig iron and tea, and was in a convoy of ships when a storm hit. Running low on fuel, the Gairsoppa broke off from the convoy and set a course for Galway, Ireland.

It never made it, succumbing to a German torpedo in the contested waters of the North Atlantic. Of the 85 people on board, only one survived.

The Gairsoppa came to rest nearly 15,400 feet (4,700 meters) below the surface, where for decades it was lost to the world. A previous effort to locate the shipwreck failed.

Odyssey found it relatively quickly, and insists the depth of the site won't prevent a full cargo recovery.

"We were fortunate to find the shipwreck sitting upright, with the holds open and easily accessible," Odyssey chief executive Greg Stemm said.

Click to see more images of the SS Gairsoppa

"This should enable us to unload cargo through the hatches as would happen with a floating ship alongside a cargo terminal."

Odyssey is a world leader in deep-ocean exploration and has numerous shipwreck hunting projects in process around the globe.

In May 2007, it announced it had found half a million silver coins and hundreds of gold objects from a ship they code-named the "Black Swan," which went down in 1804 in the Atlantic off the Strait of Gibraltar. The find is being contested by Spain, which claims the trove.

In the latest operation, the firm recently conducted remotely operated vehicles from its main ship, the Odyssey Explorer, to inspect the Gairsoppa wreck. It acquired still and video imagery from the site which were used to confirm the identify and evaluate the condition of the ship.

Photographs released by the company show clear details of the Gairsoppa, including a ladder leading to the forecastle deck, a waist-high compass used by the helmsman, even the hole in the steel hull blown open by the torpedo.

The find highlights the influential role that modern technology has come to play in the business of finding shipwrecks, with vastly improved sonar equipment, global positioning systems and advanced deepwater robots that scour the world's oceans for booty.

UNESCO estimates there are some three million shipwrecks worldwide, with billions of dollars in sunken treasures and priceless knowledge that can be recovered from the depths of the ocean, including vast amounts of naturally occurring copper, silver, gold and zinc deposits waiting to be discovered

"The majority of the world's ocean floor has not yet been explored," said Odyssey president Mark Gordon, who told AFP that the discovery at some 4,700 meters (15,400 feet) beneath below the ocean's surface is a treasure trove for companies like his.

"We know more about the surface of the moon than we know about the deepest parts of the oceans. It's exciting to be working at depths like these and to be among the pioneers of deep ocean exploration in this unexplored frontier."

cool Rare crab re-appears in Malacca

MALACCA: The re-appearance of a rare species of crab along the shores here has caused a stir among the people, especially Christians, due to a cross-like mark on its shell.

The crustacean, with the scientific name Charybdisferiatus, is a species of Malacostraca and is mainly found in Malaysian and Indonesian waters.

It was reportedly last seen in the Straits of Malacca in the 1960s.The species is different from another commonly found species in the state and which also has a cross on its shell.

A fisherman from Tengkera here hauled a dozen of these crabs on Sunday, sparking a frenzy among locals who rushed to buy the crabs.

The fisherman, who only wanted to be known as Man, 65, said the crabs were considered scarce.

He claimed that the crab was last caught in small numbers in the late 1960s.

“Only minimal quantities of the crabs were caught. Many locals don't buy them to eat, but to preserve the shell as it's considered sacred,” Man said.

State Rural Development and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk R. Perumal said the state would ask the Fisheries Department to record and monitor the landings of the rare crab.

“We may conserve the crab by breeding it,” he added.

A marine biologist, who declined to be named, said the crabs became rare after rapid development along the state coastline led to the deterioration of the mangrove swamps where the crabs thrived.

Legend has it that Saint Francis Xavier was sailing to Malacca from an Indonesian island sometime in the 16th Century when he was caught in a storm in the Straits of Malacca.

He then dipped his crucifix into the sea and prayed to God to calm the raging storm.

However, the crucifix slipped from his grip and fell into the sea. He prayed that he could get it back.

When he reached the shores of Malacca safely, St Francis saw a crab crawling on the beach and clutching the same crucifix between its claws.

Surprised, St Francis knelt down and recovered his crucifix.

He blessed the crab and the sign of a cross then appeared on its back.

Hot- Gold's free fall is far from over, expert warns

By Al Olson

Earlier this month, the price of gold skyrocketed to $1,900 an ounce. Today, the gold meltdown continued, as the price plummeted another 2 percent to $1,600 an ounce.

So much for all those commercials for investing in gold. And the slide is not over, Marc Faber, author of the Gloom Boom & Doom Report.

"We overshot on the upside when we went over $1,900," the fund manager, who has 25 percent of his portfolio in gold, told CNBC.

More from CNBC:

"We're now close to bottoming at $1,500, and if that doesn't hold it could bottom to between $1,100-$1,200."

Faber, who said that the recent sell-off had come about following nervousness about industrial metals, added that a 40 percent correction wouldn't surprise him.

U.S. gold suffered its biggest daily drop in more than five years on Friday.

Recent falls in the price of gold came after a sustained rally which saw some predict that prices would hit $2,000 or even higher.

While gold is considered a safe-haven investment, investors have been turning to the U.S. dollar and Treasury securities.

hot-Gold Could Fall to $1,100: Faber

The price of gold, which has fallen in recent weeks as part of a broader market sell-off, has even further to fall, Marc Faber, author of the Gloom Boom, and Doom Report, told CNBC Monday."We overshot on the upside when we went over $1,900," said the fund manager, who has 25 percent of his portfolio in gold [XAU= 1630.1899 3.34 (+0.21%) ].

"We're now close to bottoming at $1,500, and if that doesn't hold it could bottom to between $1,100-$1,200."

Faber, who said that the recent sell-off had come about following nervousness about industrial metals, added that a 40 percent correction wouldn't surprise him.

US gold suffered its biggest daily drop in more than five years on Friday.

Recent falls in the gold price came after a sustained rally which saw some predict that prices would hit $2,000 or even higher.

While he is bearish in the long-term, he forecast a rebound in markets in the short term.

"Both equity markets and gold markets have become very oversold, and I think a rebound is occurring," he said.

"Following this rebound, which I expect to get underway this week, there will be a longer slowdown."

John Woods, Chief Investment Officer at Citi Private Bank, told CNBC Monday that he believes gold will fall to around $1,400 before continuing its long-term rise.

"It was massively over-bought in the last couple of weeks and now it will get over-sold," he said.

"I don't think the long-term trend is broken." The markets started off Monday in jittery mode after the failure of the weekend's International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting to announce any new action on the euro zone debt crisis.

Faber predicted a short-term rebound when he spoke to CNBC at the start of August . Since then, the S&P 500 [.SPX 1162.95 26.52 (+2.33%) ] has fallen by 50 points.

While the spotlight has been on Greece and the euro zone in recent weeks, Faber believes that the sell-off is actually being prompted by a slowdown in China.

"Asian markets are weak, Asian currencies are weak and economically sensitive stocks are weak because there's a more meaningful slowdown in China," he said.

"You have a capital goods level where capital spending increases dramatically and companies keep spending to a high level, but because of the acceleration, it can lead to recession simply by the economy growing at a steady rate, and I think we are at this point in China."

Some observers have warned that the true scale of China's debt is much larger than official statistics suggest, as much is held at the local government level after a huge stimulus following the post-Lehman slowdown.

However, Faber said that long-term investors who "believe in the Asian economic growth story" should not be spooked.

"In China at least deficits and government intervention is leading to infrastructure spending. There are overcapacities but ultimately these will be used," he said.

Faber also maintained that "it would be a huge disaster if banks weren't able to speculate," after the resignation of UBS chief executive Oswald Gruebel Saturday following the much-publicized failure of internal controls to halt a $2.3 billion loss, apparently from one rogue trader.

Angry Birds Plush toys, which are expected to be a hit for children six to eight years old, are based on the popular cell phone app Angry Birds.

Educational learning is another big trend with Leapfrog's Leappad, a learning tablet designed specifically for children aged three to five, among the favorite toys for that age group. olds. It includes a built-in camera and video recorder.

hot-Developers expect higher property prices

About half of Malaysian property developers nationwide surveyed in July expect to raise prices at the back of a spike in cost of building materials.

According to the Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association Malaysia (Rehda), about half of those surveyed plan to raise prices by 15 percent at launches this year.

On top of that, a whopping 65 percent of the 147 respondents expect general prices to rise up to 20 percent in the second half of 2011.

Presenting the survey results in Petaling Jaya today, Kuala Lumpur Rehda chief NK Tong ( right ) said much of the price rise is led by massive spikes in construction costs.

Leading this price hike is the cost of steel reinforcement which has gone up by 13 percent to RM2,589 per tonne compared to 2010, cement up 4 percent from RM15.64 per bag in 2010 and brick and partition, up 27 percent to 42 sen compared to 2010.

"This is experienced by 84 percent of the respondents," Tong said.

He noted that in Penang and the Klang Valley, land costs have also raised prices, with land going for as high as RM2,000 per square feet in Kuala Lumpur.

Rehda president Michael Yam added that labour costs are expected to also grow, particularly after the 6P amnesty programme.

"Much of the illegal workers which are to be made legal, work on construction sites.

"Will their wages be higher once they are legal?" Yam asked.

Beyond this, Rehda also expects the costs of compliance to rise, including waterworks for which fees are expected to go up as these are standardised nationwide.

"This does not bode very well for property developers...it places them in a difficult situation trying to contain costs to select a marketable price, and at the same time juggle the plethora of costs related to building materials, compliance and numerous contributions, among other," Yam said.

Levy, fine 'adding insult to injury'

Other factors contributing to a rise in prices include increased quotas for bumiputera lots.

Yam ( right ) said without automatic release schemes, developers are forced to hang on to unsold bumiputera units.

He said that to release these units so they can be sold to non-bumiputera buyers, developers have to pay a levy matching the bumiputera discount plus a fine.

"This is like adding insult to injury," he said lamenting that despite this, developers are still treated like as the "greedy bad guys".

He added that bumiputera lots are also hard to sell as "even bumiputera buyers don't want to buy these lots as it restricts them from re-selling to non-bumiputera".

cool-Luxury retailer introduces solid gold phone with a $60,000 price tag

Feature-rich smartphones aren't cheap, and critics of pricey mobile devices often claim that they are too expensive, despite their wide-ranging capabilities. Those people will want to look away now, as the newest device from Danish luxury retailer Aesir is sure to make their blood boil. Introducing the limited edition AE+Y phone — an 18-carat solid gold handset that can't use apps, email, or mobile internet, but still carries a ridiculous price of 42,000 euros (roughly $60,000).

The Aesir AE+Y is more shiny than smart
The lavish device boasts groundbreaking features such as speed dial, call forwarding, and even a built-in calculator. Its LCD screen measures a modest 2", and its battery can handle a measly 5 hours of talk time — compared to the Droid Bionic's 11-hour, and iPhone 4's 14-hour limits. But Aesir is focusing more on form than function, and the manufacturer is quick to point out that the edge-to-edge key design is a first in mobile handsets.

The AE+Y's barebones user interface was shaped by renowned designer Tom Hingston, and the phone's unorthodox keypad is laser-engraved and features "advanced LED backlighting." We're not quite sure how that varies from regular LED backlighting, but I guess we have to take Aesir's word on that.

Aesir's target market is clearly the super rich, but do the wealthy not also desire useful gadgets? Then again, if you're affluent enough to drop $60,000 on a solid gold phone, you're probably too busy playing polo and ordering around your servants to care about apps or email anyway.

For those of you who are only rich — as opposed to super rich — Aesir is also making a stainless steel version which will retail for a slightly less mind boggling $10,000. Both devices will debut this fall in Europe, and shortly thereafter in the U.S.

cool Fahmi penyelamat

Tarantini berhadapan siasatan berasingan membabitkan pengedaran dadah. Dalam kenyataan kepada polis beliau mengakui: “Saya fikirkan wanita dan kokain cara terbaik membolehkan saya menjadi anggota kumpulan sosial.” – Agensi
